Stephen Opler joined Genesis Capital as a Principal in June 2006. Prior to joining Genesis, he was one of three founders of One Georgia Bank, a de novo community bank in Midtown Atlanta. One Georgia Bank opened in May 2006 after being the first state chartered de novo bank in Georgia history to raise more than $20 Million in start-up capital. Stephen serves on the Board of Directors of One Georgia Bank and as Chair of its Governance and Nominating Committee and as a member of its Executive, Loan and Audit Committees.
Steve was formerly a business consultant and legal advisor to a variety of clients, including the ninth largest North American investment bank. Until December 2003, he was a partner in the Capital Markets Group of Alston & Bird LLP, an international law firm headquartered in Atlanta. He focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, corporate governance and securities matters. His tenure there spanned more than 18 years and he was a partner in the firm for ten years.
Georgia Trend magazine selected him as one of The Legal Elite: Georgias Most Effective Lawyers. For three consecutive years Law & Politics Magazine has named him one of Georgias Super Lawyers.
Stephens experience has included the representation of public and private companies in sophisticated corporate finance transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, management-led buyouts, public and private securities offerings, and compliance matters among others. Over the past twelve years, Opler completed acquisitions with an aggregate transaction value in excess of $1.2 billion.
As an active volunteer and resident of Atlanta, he serves on the boards of directors of Hands On Atlanta, the Southeast Region of the Anti-Defamation League and The Temple. Steve serves as the Co-Chair for the Atlanta Regional Selection Committee for University of Virginias Jefferson Scholarship. He was the recipient of the Piedmont Hospital/Atlanta Braves 2004 Outstanding Community Leader Award. Steve formerly has been a founding member of the Board of Directors of TechBridge and a member of the Operating Board of The Commerce Club.
Stephen attended the University of Virginia and received a Bachelors of Science in Commerce with a concentration in Accounting; he has passed the CPA exam. He also attended the University of Alabama where he earned a Juris Doctor.
