April 12, 2004 - Piedmont Medical Center has announced plans to purchase Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper, Georgia for about $40 million, hospital officials said Monday. Mountainside is a 35-bed acute care hospital. Piedmont officials have entered into a definitive agreement for the purchase with SunLink Health Systems, Inc., according to a news release. The purchase is part of the medical center's plans to expand health care services in north Georgia, Piedmont officials said. Piedmont Medical Center's hospitals include Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and Fayette Community Hospital in Fayetteville. The medical center also is the parent company of the Piedmont Physicians Group and the Piedmont Clinic.
